Program Participant Spotlight: Gary Whitfield, NeON Works

How did you find out about NeON Works?

The program director knows my father, so I came for the summer and started, then got a job at NeON Works in their building doing maintenance, cleanup. And I got to learn about interviews and stuff like that.

When was that?

This June. My dad talked to the program director, and then I came the next day. I had wanted to find something to do for the summer.

So you’re still new! Have you been liking it so far?

Yeah, it’s pretty cool.

What else have you gotten to participate in here?

I did a workshop recently which was learning about finance, jobs, and how to do interviews. It was three days. Now, hopefully I’ll get a job contact–something full-time. I just want to find some kind of work to do. I don’t have anything specific in mind; I just want to find something that I can do for the time being.

Do you like the people here?

Yeah. They’re good to be around, and I get to learn their tips and tricks. They don’t make it hard or anything.

Has the job training been helpful?

Yeah, I feel like I know so much more now, like how to even go into an interview. They taught us what kind of questions we might be asked and how to answer them and what kinds of things they want and don’t want. They did resume workshops too. They also offered [Occupational Safety and Health Administration] training.
