BCS works in neighborhoods impacted by systemic poverty. We believe all Brooklynites should have the resources, education, opportunities, and safety they need to thrive.

Welcome to Brooklyn Community Services

With over 50 award-winning programs and 28 locations across Brooklyn, BCS serves over 20,000 individuals in need annually. We empower Brooklyn residents to maximize their potential, serving low income Brooklynites of all ages: from early childhood to adults in their senior years. We strengthen communities by fostering the educational success of children, the leadership development of youth, the employment and housing stability of adults, the advancement of individuals living with disabilities, and the empowerment of seniors and families.

Congratulations to all of Brooklyn’s public school students graduating this month! BCS furthers the impressive legacy of Brooklyn public schools through our education programs across the borough, with offerings that range from early childhood education to after-school engagement. In honor of this, we’re taking a look at Bed-Stuy’s Brooklyn Boys' High School (pictured), constructed in the late 19th century as an offshoot of the Central Grammar School, Brooklyn’s first public high school.
The Boys' High School was designed by famed NYC architect James W. Naughton and is often considered his finest work. In 1975, the building was landmarked by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission, and since 1982, it’s been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Stroll down Marcy Avenue today and you can still admire its iconic square tower and terracotta exterior.
Today, BCS' education services reaches Bed Stuy students by way of the Brooklyn High School for Leadership and Community Service, a transfer school that helps over-age and under-credited youth successfully graduate. We partner with the school to provide essential support services to students on their pathway to graduation!

Meet Sebastian Jindra-Cotilla, one of the awesome teachers at our Education Center in Sunset Park. Sebastian has been at the Ed Center since January and teaches ELA and math courses for our GED students.
While still new to BCS, Sebastian has already made a lasting impact on students' education. Along with the Education Center’s Program Director, he has increased the number of math classes offered and also ensured that students now get both ELA and math instruction every day they are in class.
Sebastian’s favorite moments at the Ed Center are when something “clicks” for one of his students: seeing the light in their eyes when they finally understand a challenging concept or discover a new problem-solving approach.
“I really enjoy just opening students to new perspectives: reading together, looking at art together, responding, and learning whether or not they enjoy something,” Sebastian says.
A huge thank you to Sebastian and all of our other Education Center teachers for their amazing work!

Did you know that many of Brownsville and East New York’s empty lots are now community gardens? Walk around these neighborhoods and you’ll find plenty of green spaces that are enjoyed and cared for by neighbors.
At our Transitional Living Center (TLC) in East New York, the TLC Garden serves as a safe, quiet haven for the Center’s residents. We hope to soon reinstate our garden maintenance program where volunteers can plant, weed, and prune flowers every week.
Would you be interested in helping in the garden? Let us know! And for more information on BCS volunteer opportunities, head to the link in our bio!
