Mobile Care Unit Operations
What is a Mobile Care Unit?
Unhoused Americans lack access showers, which are vital for physical health and social connection. This is an infrastructure problem that we can solve.
We take old buses (think: public transit) and work with Dave’s to add showers to them, and then we drive them around Brooklyn for individuals who want to take a shower.
How does it work?
The mobile shower unit is an expansion of Turning Point Brooklyn’s “We Care About You” shower project, which operated out of Sunset Park for a number of years, and provides users with showers as well as clean towels, shampoo, shaving kits, soap, socks and underwear, toilet facilities, access to laundry services, snacks, and a safe space to relax.
In addition to the physical amenities of showers and a safe space, the mobile shower unit will also employ an outreach coordinator and Peer Specialists to assist individuals in need with access to
- Peer Counseling
- Support with housing, mental health and employment
- Linkages to resources
When do you start?
We are aiming to start with 1 mobile shower unit in September 2020.
What about COVID-19?
We will follow the recommended practices to maintain physical distance and protect the health of our guests and volunteers.
