The East New York Clubhouse is an internationally recognized Clubhouse accredited by Clubhouse International. It provides a community environment for adults with mental illness within which they can attain their life goals. Members and staff work side-by-side to accomplish the day-to-day work of the Clubhouse. There are three work units within the program focusing on education and employment, food service, and administrative tasks. By participating in these units, members develop valuable skills, a sense of self-worth and confidence. Additionally, members use the Clubhouse resources to regain connections to the greater community by accessing employment, education, and housing opportunities. The members and staff actively live the slogan, “Reaching Greater Heights Everyday” through the overarching aim of focusing on their aspirations and achieving life goals.
The Clubhouse Staff work with members individually to help them develop the supports necessary to negotiate the challenges they face in achieving their goals. Through the utilization of member leadership and participation in various activities, members receive assistance in accessing job opportunities, reaching wellness goals, and avoiding isolation.
Olubunmi Hester, a single mother of twins who suffers from depression and anemia, is currently attending the BCS East New York Clubhouse (ENYCH) program. The Clubhouse helps adults with mental illnesses reach their personal goals in a non-institutional setting.
